Hi,

Firstly thank you for reading my problem, I greatly
appreciate your time.

I am having a hardware/os related problem. Whenever I
start to work with intense programes (Like Age Of
Mythology, Adobe Premiere, Adboe Photoshop .etc.,.) my
system becomes quite unstable and then just restarts. It
happens quite often, almost everytime I run a big
application or I give my PC something big to do (Like
sort my mp3 list into alphabetical order). It's almost as
if someone has pushed the restart button on me. Any
idea's?

Anthony.

I have the same problem with Windows restarting at any
given time. There are times I can be plugging away at
FileMaker, Photoshop, Outlook, and an Internet Explorer
page or two and I won't have a problem. Other days I
can't get through an hour where I won't have one or two
unforseen restarts. Just yesterday my computer restarted
while I was only using two Internet Explorer pages!

I thought I was the only one with this problem.
Everytime my machine restarts and I send an error message
I get the same response...one of my devices are causing
the conflict.

Oddly enough, my coworker (who also runs XP pro) has
never had the problem I am experiencing. Then again he
has never installed the XP Security Update 811493 which
has a known problem to slow down your computer's
performance. I, on the other hand, keep all my updates
up to date. Could the underlying problem be in the
security update? I don't know.

I have encountered a website that discusses this
particular issue, http://www.kellys-korner-
xp.com/win_xp_restart.htm. Here is what they have to say:

By default when WinXP encounters a system failure, it
reboots without warning. The setting that controls this
can be changed:
Control Panel/System/Advanced/Settings (Startup &
Recovery)/System Failure/Uncheck-Automatically Restart.
To view the event log: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer
or Start/Run/eventvwr.To bypass the BSOD altogether and
enable the instant "Auto Reboot" feature:
Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashC
ontrol. Right click on "AutoReboot", modify and change
the value to 1. Exit, reboot. To disable set the value
back to 0.

Because I cannot afford to have my computer restart in
the middle of my work, I have just made this modification
and I let you know if I have any further problems. I am
curious to see if the next time my computer encounters a
problem if it will just freeze up and force me to
manually restart my computer.

....and WinXP is supposed to be a much more stable
operating system...

It's been a few days now since I have implemented the
before mentioned remedy to unforseen restarts. I haven't
had problems with my comp restarting by itself and I
haven't had problems with it locking up. However I have
gone up to two weeks without having my computer restart
itself.

Happy computing.

Jerry
