I have found the a folder in the windows directory
called "repair" contains copies of some of the hive files
that form the directory; specifically "system"
and "software". When the active copies of either of
these files (found in the windows\system32\config
directory) are corrupted in any way, XP will not start.
Using the recovery console and replacing them with the
backups in the repair directory allows XP to start.
My question is: How does Windows update the "repair"
folder? It does not seem to happen when the system sets
a restore point. Anybody have an answer?
