Windows Reinstall Question

Could someone help a girl out? I need to reinstall Windows
2k cuz of some network problems. So I put in the Windows
2000 CD and told it to do a clean install. The comp then
reboots and I work my way up to the screen asking which
partition I should install windows 2k to. I have 71 MB of
Unpartitioned space and a 4773 MB partition in NFTS space.
The setup doen't let me delete the NTFS parition for some
reason. Will I need to delete it to get my clean install?
If so, could someone please walk me through doing this and
how to proceed thru the rest of the installation? Thanks so
much.
 
Thanks for the link but it doesn't tell me how to remove
the current NTFS partition. If I put my new Windows 2K
installation in the same partition as my old Windows 2k,
will it automatically delete everything on there so I can
start anew? Thanks.
 
To wipe the drive, some ways include; boot a win98 startup disk, run fdisk
and delete all partition information found (as long as NTFS is primary). Or
boot the Windows 2000 CD-Rom or setup disks and when you get to the point,
delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions found, then abort the
install. Or use a utility named delpart.

supposed to do this some other way?

When I ran the Win2k setup and got to the part on
partitions, it did not allow me to delete the NTFS partion
for whatever reason so that option is out. Also, I dont
think I have any Win98 boot disks unless the original
install CD counts. Please let me know what I can do. Thanks.
 
You didn't mention the drive controller (possibly SCSI, or ultra DMA, or
ATA100, or raid, or serial ATA), but you may need to boot the Windows 2000
setup disks or CD-Rom and *F6* very early and very important (at setup is
inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection,
and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to
insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver for your drive's
controller in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows 2000 Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

Im a girl too let me help another girl out. you need to
install 2000 in the 4773 ntfs space first you need to
format the drive and that will erase everything off of the
drive then you should be able to choose that drive to
install 2000 to. The rest of the procedure should be easy
to follow. If you have any other questions feel free to
email me and i will help you out step by step.

Is this a Dell, HP, Compaq, Gateway or one of the other big
name brand systems?

That 71 megs of unpartitioned space could be the hidden* recovery
files they like to use on systems marketed to home and small
business. They save money by not supplying OS install CDs and
the user gets shafted if the PC suffers a major problem with
the hard drive that wipes out the recovery files.

If you're not wanting to save anything on there, got your 2000
CD and all your drivers and apps, first see if the hard drive's
manufacturer has a utility to do a "low level" format or a
zero fill operation. That'll nuke EVERYTHING, restoring the
drive to its original, new out of the box condition with no
data on it. Ontrak Disk Manager can do both low level formatting
(for drives that can do it) and zero fill for any drive.

Zero fill writes all zeros to all of every sector on the drive.
It leaves none of the OS formatting or data behind and it's a
good thing to do with any drive you sell or otherwise let go
from your custody. Some advanced and tedious effort may be able
to recover some data, but unless you're a really nasty criminal
I wouldn't worry after doing one zero fill operation on a drive. ;)

*This sort of nastiness often makes it diffucult to use the
drives in systems other than what they shipped in. I recently
had to use Ontrak Disk Manager to "zero fill" an 80gig from an
HP so whatever the heck HP did to it would quit blocking
the new system from booting. Even worse was the 8gig from a Compaq
where Compaq had edited the drive's ROM code so the first,
default entry said it was a 13gig. Seagate replaced it under
warranty. :)
