Windows Reinstall Leaves me with no drivers

I have been advised to post in a new thread after initially posting a message in the 'Mesh Gripes' thread.
A couple of weeks ago all my USB devices suddenly stopped working - printer, memory sticks, externall HDD, Printer, ADSL modem, cameras (for which I had installed drivers). The message I kept getting was something like 'the USB device has malfunctioned'.
I got on to Mesh Technical support. After a couple of other attempts they advised me to reinstall Windows (XP Pro). Before doing so they said 'copy the drivers folder' which I did. MESH no longer supply a disk with drivers on.
When (being not very knowledgeable) I contacted them again to explain how many things no longer work, they told me to go to MSI.com and download new drivers, without any instruction on WHAT drivers or how to download them seing as the computer can't connect to the internet since the USB ports STILL don't work. When I asked how I might go about this they referred me to their £1 a minute software phoneline - a bit rich since their advice caused this particular problem!
Unfortunately due to what I consider their poorly explained advice, I don't really know what's missing. For sure the sound doesn't work, the standby option is greyed out when I try to close down, and the USB's still don't work. I have tried to use the 'install new drivers' facility but it keeps saying it can't find any better driver than is already on there. I'm nonplussed. Any suggestions or should I head for my local PC shop?

Hopefully this is the info required:
OS - Windows XP Media Center 2005
Motherboard - Manufacturer MSI, model MS-7173 version 10
CPU - Intel Pentium D 805 Dual Core
1024 MB DDR2 Memory (2x512)
Graphics: ATI Radeon Xpress 200 Series RAM:64MB
Sound Card: Realtek High Definition Audio
Modem: PCI SoftV92 Modem (although I was actually using an external Speedtouch 330 USB ADSL modem
Network card: Realtek RTL8139/810x Fast Ethernet NIC

Bought end June 06.

I'm sure MESH have to go through the series of most obvious fixes but now it's in a worse state than when I started!
I had a feeling from some internet browsing that the motherboard might be at fault, but it seems an excruciating process to get to the point where MESH would tell me to send it back. Now an extra obstacle has been created in that all of these drivers are missing and they are not really helping very much to get them back on there (a drivers CD would have helped immesurably - how much do they cost? 50p?). Should I manage to get the drivers back on and the USBs still don't work, I'll have the option of waiting a month for them to try to fix it, and this discussion thread does not fill me with optimism for this outcome.

Does this sound like an expensive fix if I take it to a shop?

A new Motherboard would invalidate your warranty!
But it's up to you to decide that, if it's other parts as well it could get expensive.
You have to balance it up with loosing your pc for a month+ whilst mesh fix it.

Hmm tricky one.

They now seem to be saying this has morphed into a software problem (drivers missing). I'm not sure how to get them to accept it may be a hardware issue.

I feel a bit stitched up!

Your not the only one to think that after buying from mesh!
Have a look at my last post in the main mesh thread?

So hang on does your interent now work - are you posting on here from that PC?

I'm at work now but the PCs here don't have CD burners to copy the drivers (even if I can find them). The chap on Tech support suggested I visit an 'Internet Cafe' - I live in rural Monmouthshire which is nice but not exactly stacked out with cybercafes. I asked them if they could send me a disk with the drivers on (like they used to) but they told me no. So I seem to be caught in a good old catch 22. No drivers - no further support - no computer. No computer - no downloading drivers.

Although having said that I have got a floppy drive in this thing. how many floppies will it take - 50?

How far away are you from Caerphilly ??

There is, or was, long time since I been there, a computer shop that I trusted. Tecno Computers.

I can ask Taffycat to look to see if they are still there for you if you are interested ... they will/should be able to ascertain if the PC is worth fixing and do so if needed.

Hi, thanks for the tip although I'm a fair distance from Caerphilly. I was thinking of a small place I've spotted in Monmouth. In the meantime I've had another go on MESH's tech support website to see if they accept it needs to go back for repair. I wonder how I'll get on...

Cheers!

Another option would be to use mesh's own forum to post & ask for help directly.
Others have used it in the past and got help, so it may help you.
You need to register on the forum, details are at http://forums.hexus.net

Good luck.

Get a report from that shop ... me, I would cut my losses and see if the shop can help. They will know how/what drivers to install. :thumb:

I'm lucky in that i have been able to fix all the problems i have had on my pc myself.
But it may be time to get the pc fixed by someone other than mesh!
What ever you decide please let us all know how you get on & good luck.:thumb:
