Question : what do I do with the $WINDOWS.~Q directory after I have
installed Vista? It is chewing up 1.5Gb and I'd like to get rid of it if it
isn't necessary. Is it safe to blow it away?

Also, what about $INPLACE.~TR and $Upgrade.~OS?

-Kevin

Where about are these? I've heard Andre talk about the $-panther something
before but not quite sure what these are.
Hey, I'm here to learn as well you know :o) Best let Andre answer this one,
but I'd reckon that it's just a temporary folder with temporary files of
which were used during the installation...

.... but wait for Andre :o)

Zack,

Thanks for the response. The directory is located off C:\, so the directory
is C:\$WINDOWS.~Q. Also, the other directories are: C:\$INPLACE.~TR and
C:\$Upgrade.~OS.

FYI, I had installed 5308 as an upgrade to WinXP Pro. It looks like it
contains a lot of stuff found in my old system32 directory, but I could be
wrong. If so, maybe it's a backup for a rollback feature? I will give more
details on the contents of this directory later (I'm at work and don't have
access to my home box).

Thanks,
Kevin

Yeh, if I'm not mistaken, this is random crap from the previous installation
which should be deleted without a problem. Have a browse through anyway and
make sure that none of your files are in there :o)

Just FYI, I had gone ahead and blew away these directories without any ill
effects. So, if you have these on your system, you might be able to recover
around 2GB of space by removing these. (of course, just because my system
didn't blow up doesn't mean yours won't :-))

-Kevin

once setup completes successfully, you don't need these directories. They
should get removed automatically but appear not to be at this time.

It should be all OK to go :o)

Andre, after I installed Vista *and* deleted what was in the Windows.old
folder, I had 8GB filled in my 80GB drive... so maybe this is about right?

Almost certainly a bug then - whyever would Windows leave random huge
folders on a clean installation? Anybody's guess really :o)

For me, the directories were in c:\

No ill effects from removing them, and I got back a few gigs.

See, I thought it would be as simple as Shift+Delete, too. But that's
when I ran into a snag:

I've been a computer tech for a few years now, and I'm at a complete
loss. Nothing will remove this folder - not Windows, not Killbox, not
Shredder, not Eraser, nothing. I get the same error in every program,
and yet the file - despite being "not there" - is still there. The fact
that it's SecuROM makes the annoyance increase by no small amount, too.
Any suggestions?
try running chkdsk %systemdrive% /f and delete again
