If you have a dual boot system, XP and 2000, where all your files are located in the 2000 documents folder, then uninstalling XP will not delete the files that are in the 2000 directory

For general security and precautionary reasons, it is not a bad idea to 'backup' or copy the personal files to a CD DVD or external device

By the way share your e-mail address with people you know. You are now open to huge amounts of spam mail to the hotmail address listed in your posting

To avoid spam, disguise (or "munge") your e-mail address.

Use a munged address whenever you post it to a newsgroup, chat room, or bulletin board such as these Newsgroups

For example, you could give your e-mail address as "someoneATsomwwhereDOTcom" using "AT" instead of "@" an "DOT" instead of ".".

A person can interpret your address, but the automated programs that spammers use cannot.

This is how so many spammers get your address in the first instance
 
If you do an upgrade installation over the top of Windows
2000 your data should be safe, but if there is a problem
that requires you to format the drive/partition then the
data would be lost. So a back up of your data and settings
is prudent.
It also depends on how your system is setup; if you have
several partitions, with data files on a different partition
from the operating system, your data is very safe, short of
a hard drive failure. That is the best reason to have
multiple partitions.

Really, hate to answer you this way, but - it depends!

First, what files are you talking about? Windows 2000 system files or
files YOU created while working under Windows 2000.

If you are worried about personal (not system) files, you should know
the Windows XP installation program will not delete any of your files
unless you format your hard drive.

If you are worried about your Windows 2000, Windows will ask you what
to do.

First choice: install Windows XP in Windows 2000's directory. This
will erase your Windows 2000 installation and replace it with Windows
XP.

Second choice: install Windows XP in a different directory (or on a
different hard drive, or disk partition). This will preserve your
Windows 2000 installation and when booting up your PC a screen will
ask you which Windows you want to load.

Again, in all of these scenarious your personal files will be kept
unless you format your hard disk during the installation process.
