I have a Dell that came with Windows XP, my system had
several viruses on it and the local computer repair
erased my hard drive. He said he reinstalled all my
software. Somehow I have Window professional with no cd
or documentation. I need to put windows office back on my
system as it was erased as well.
How can I erase windows professional and get windows xp
back on my system? I have the disc for the xp home
version but it will not let me doe it?
Thanks Anne

You may use the System Restore CD (or some similar
software) that came with your Dell computer. You can try
booting the computer with it on the CD drive or just
insert it on the drive and follow the instructions. It
may install all the original files and drivers necessary
to run your pc as before. Then you can attempt to install
your office app.

The only way to change from WinXP Pro to WinXP Home is to
format the drive and start over. There is no supported downgrade path
or technique.

Simply boot from the WinXP Home installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
