I have xp operating system.Sometime ago I think I
reinstalled Windows,though not necesarily properly.Anyhow
now when I click on "My computer" then C Drive,in the
drop down list I have two entries which are "Windows"
and "Windows 0".the first dated 28 Nov.2001 19624 files
size 2.51gb the second dated 24 Mar. 2003 15208 files,
size2.33gb
My question is can I delete "Windows" without any
problems and just keep Windows 0

Hi,

Yep, sure sounds like you have two installations. Go ahead and try and
delete the \Windows folder, if it is the one in use, it will not allow
deletion.

Thanks for your help Rick. Unfortunately Windows wouldn't
allow me to delete or rename either of the folders

Hi,

What sort of error message you get?
Start/run cmd, then run PATH. Where does it indicate the system to be
installed?

Did start, run.Up came a window headed Windows.0\System32
\cmd.exe. underneath it said Documents and Settings.Sorry
I don't know how to run Path or what it is.If you want to
give up on me, I quite understand.I didn't get any error
message. Thank you.

Hi,

It means that the Windows.0 folder is your installation folder. What, and be
specific, happens when your try to delete the Windows directory? Nothing at
all?

I get a box come up which says "confirm file
deletion"this just starts, then stops,in effect nothing
happens.

Hi,

Try deleting just a subdirectory - does the same thing occur?

Went into Windows and deleted one of my unimportant
screensavers and it went. Was that what you meant?

Hi,

Yes, that's what I meant. Keep trying to remove smaller chunks, this may
help us isolate the problem.

It deleted everything except 14 separate folders named
$ntuninst, System 32, bootstat. Awaiting further
instructions.

Hi,

Can you delete those folders? Or does the system balk?

Hi,

It may be that you need to take ownership first. Right-click the folder,
select properties. Go to the security tab and click advanced. You can take
control of the folders on the owner tab. For the security tab to appear in a
WinXP Pro system, you must disable simple file sharing in the control
panel/folder options/view tab. For a WinXP Home system, you must restart in
safe mode and logon as administrator. More details here:
