I just reinstalled windows xp, whilst leaving the file
structure intact to ensure i did not loose any data.
However, I overlooked the fact that i set my documents as
a private file! Now, despite setting the same username, i
have a totally new account! Under documents and settings,
i am now labeled as username.computername no longer
just username . I have full administrator privilages but
when i try to access the file, it says i don't have
permission. Can anyone help?

You'll have to take ownership of the folder.
First of all you have to turn off simple file sharing.
Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Option, View tab, last option. Uncheck
Simple File Sharing.
Ok the windows.
Right click your old username profile and select properties.
Select the security tab.
Click the Advanced button.
Now select the Owner tab.
Select your username in the window.
Make sure to check to option at the bottom of the window to replace on
subfolders....
Click Apply.
Ok the windows.
Now you should have access to the old profile folder.
