When running Photoshop 7.0 for the first time after installing the program , a window popped up saying that both the Adobe Photoshop primary Scratch and my Windows primary paging file where on the same "volume'? It said that would affect my performance. What is the "volume" and what, how and where do I put Adobe PS on a different one?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Glenn

volume is hard drive letter. Don't worry about it unless you are a real
heavy user in which case you should be using fast drives in a striped
configuration!

Glenn,
If you happen to have multiple drives or even multiple partitions set up on
your system, you should assign one of these as your primary scratch disk in
Photoshop, but only for performance reasons. It doesn't hurt to have PS
scratch & pagefile on the same volume (aka partition); it just means that
the Windows paging file (aka swapfile) & PS scratch disk (sort of a tempory
storage space used by PS) will sometimes simultaneously compete for hard
disk traffic. By assigning the scratch disk to a separate drive (preferably)
or partition you can avoid these temporary bottlenecks. Hope this helps.

Once again Gentlemen , thank you for you expert answers! I can't tell you how much it is appreciated and I hope I can help as you guys have in the future as I become more computer literate.

Photoshop will always give this warning when first opened after
installation. Have you got a second HDD? If so select this for the scratch
disk for Photoshop. If you have not got another HDD but have another
partition on your main drive select this partition for the scratch. If you
have not got a spare HDD or partition you could make a small partition with
Partition Magic if you wanted. I wouldn't worry too much about it as it is
only a temp file while using Photoshop. To set the scratch open Photoshop
and go up to edit\preferences and it will open in general keep clicking next
until you reach plugins and scratch and as far as I remember it should give
you about 3 or 4 choices. No. 1 probably says startup and this is where you
tell it where you want the scratch to be and then depending on number of
HDD's or partitions you can select the rest of the numbers and select
different partitions. Hope this helps.
