I am very frustrated. I have been attempting to download
the patch, but get an error box about cryptographic
service. I followed the instructions, and my settings
are correct, but I cannot download the patch. I have
received the worm several times now, but norton destroyed
it each time. I want this window closed, but cannot
activate the patch. What am I doing wrong? Will this
patch also take care of the pop-ups? In an unrelated
matter, I also am unable to download Java Virtual Machine
to access many websites. What is causing this problem?
Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

If you are using AOL as your ISP, you need to minimize your
AOL browser and launch Internet Explorer, then visit the Windows
Update web site while using Internet Explorer.

Try the following solution from the Windows Update Troubleshooter:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

Select:
"Problem Downloading/Installing a Software (Non-Driver) item"

Follow steps under:
"Install stops at 0% when using the AOL Browser"

While using the Internet Explorer browser, try downloading
the updates again: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Visit this web site if you still experience difficulty installing

Direct download:

Blaster Worm: Critical Security Patch for Windows XP (32-bit version)

Download & install MS Virtual Machine Build 3805.
Then visit the Windows Update website to obtain the
security updated version (Build 3810).

Here are some suggestions:

A New Window Appears When You Visit Some Web Sites

Messenger Service Window That Contains an Internet Advertisement Appears

Assuming you have AOL, you'll need to install a third-party firewall.
America Online installs its own connection settings that override
the ones that come with Windows XP. America Online's
connection settings don't include a way to turn on Windows XP's
built-in firewall.

Visit the following web site for instructions on downloading
a FREE firewall program for your computer.

Man - gotta love these updates! We did the RPC patch and
now 17 of 18 XP machines can not do ANY downloads.

On your Java question - What we did here was to go
directly to Sun Microsystems to get the Java. It is free
and works well on all our various Windows machines.

Try: www.sun.com and click on the red Java Technology
Get it Free link . This will install Java for you.

Hope that helps.
