Windows outside viewable area

I have a Dell Latitude D600 at work where I have a secondary display
connected to VGA. Then I took my laptop home where I have a much bigger
display and I used Word. When I tried to open Word the next day at work it
seemed to be outside the viewable area and I couldn't reach it. I had to
disconnect the secondary display and reboot to be able to see the Word
window. Also many of the dialog boxes of Visual Studio ended up out of reach.

How can I resolve this so no windows end up outside the viewable area?

Don't know how to "force" all windows to stay within the viewable area, but
you might change the screen resolution to something much higher to bring the
window into view then drag/resize your word window towards the top-left of
the monitor, then reset your resolution back the way you had it. (maybe
un-maximize the word window with the " _ " window resize icon as well)

To change resolution, right-click on an unused area of your desktop, select
"properties" from the pop-up menu, then select the "settings" tab.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply.

At home I have Matrox dualhead2go digital wich gives me 3200*1200. At work I
have a secondary display with 1280*1024 and I cannot increase this.

It seems to me that this must be a bug in Windows XP. What good is a window
outside the viewable area that you cannot interact with?

Maybe there is a 3rd party app that will help collect the windows.

If you are still able to see your task bar, right-click on any empty
space on it, and choose 'Cascade'.
This resizes the open windows and cascades them across your screen from
top left to bottom right.
