I had a virus problem that was fixewd. I do not know if this problem is
related: I open certain applicaions and the window shuts itself after a few
seconds. This happens when i try to open it by using "Run.." also. It does not
happen to all of the applications, but mostly to the system applications and
the Norton Anti-Virus. It does not happen to sperately standing programs like
Office.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
A lot of people are having that problem. I get it with a number of programs
from a very basic DOS game to msconfig.
I have seen lots of messages about it but no serious suggestions about what the
cause might be or how to fix it.
I did a clean install (new HD as the ONLY HD in the system) and started having
that problem with a few applications just from the WIndows XP disk. Clearly
not a virus then. (Ok, some people have suggested that Windows IS a virus...)
I went to use msconfig to disable a couple of the junk things that are loaded
at startup and had to race to de-select them and hit apply before it shut down.
Since then I have had a few other programs always do the same thing.
I have also had things like ffdshow's configuration file not even come up. I
select it and it gives a moment of drive access and nothing more. Other
programs have done the same thing including several of the configuration
programs for video codecs and one installation program (got it working but had
to race through the selected options to the actual installation part then it
was fine.)
Since there are so many people with this problem it would be nice if someone
found the cause and a fix for it.
Only real reply is one guy that has a pre-typed message with his catch-all
solution for all problems: reformat and install everything from scratch.
Heh... I ran into the problem doing just that with no software except Windows
XP itself!
