Windows on an External Drive?

I have an 80 GB 2.0 external USB drive and own two copies of Windows XP and
several supporting programs. I am now down to one computer, and am playing
with the idea of using my external drive to learn to flatten and rebuild a
drive. How would I go about installing Windows on an external USB drive?
How do you change the Bios when logging in to boot off the other drive?
What would performance be like? Does Windows have a feature that would
allow it to sync between Windows on your hard drive and the one on your
external so I could always have a ready-to-go backup/system? Thoughts?

The Windows operating systems can only be successfully installed
on an internal drive. External drives are designed for file storage
only.
