I just upgraded my XP home to Vista home premium doing a full install where
it makes the .old folder of the XP. Can this folder be deletad without
harming the Vista upgrade or does it need to be kept in order for Vista to
work?

I usually delete mine after Installing Vista from XP, It has no effect on the
PC what so ever, So I presume it is safe to Delete.

Windows.old is utilized in "returning" back to XP if you do not intend to
revert to XP you can delete the folder

You can recover data from there, if needed. And it can be used to revert to
XP. If you have recovered whatever data you need, and have no intent on
going back to XP, then delete it.
