I have windows ME and I don't see a newsgroup for it.
Anyway, I bought and installed MS Office yesterday and,
today while I was at a newsgroup I got a pop-up asking if
I wanted to update Windows Media Player. I clicked "yes".
Afterwords I found that odd. So, I downloaded an adware
scanning software to "clear the decks" so to speak. When I
did a search of updated files on my hard drive, it didn't
look like WMP was updated at all. I've heard of the new
deal out there being fake MS updates that are really
spyware.

Has anybody seen anything like this? Is this normal?

I have had pop ups on my computer informing me that updates are available that I
believe are legit, however when in doubt ALWAYS go to Windows Update to check for
updates and NEVER accept any update information that comes via email as it will
almost certainly be a worm/virus or other malware. You should also run a full virus
scan on your computer using the latest virus definitions whenever you are in
oubt. --- Steve
