I want to switch operating systems from NT 4 to XP. But I
don't want to buy an upgrade. Would rather start from
scratch and be done complete with the old NT4. Can I just
buy the home edition of XP and install it over my present
NT4? I imagine that I would have to reinstall most if not
all of the software that I now have, but I am willing to do
that. It would be nice to have a usb card that NT4 doesn't
now support.

Hi George
You wouldn't be able to install Home Edition without reformatting the hard
disk and reinstalling all your applications. You can only upgrade to XP
Professional from NT4 (as Home Edition is a lower SKU level than Workstation
was). Particularly coming from NT4 you will need to locate updated versions
of drivers and some applications. Things like DVD players and Antivirus
software that played fine on NT4 may not necessarily do the same on XP. I
would recommend you run the Windows XP upgrade advisor on your machine
