My computer was working fine, now when you start it up it
goes through the boot process then when it goes to load
windows the screen goes black and the drive light is off.
I have norton system works I booted from that cd to run a
full system scan but it does not recognize or scan any
files. In the bios it isn't recognizing any hard drive-
however I tried installing a nother drive and it loaded
windows.any ideas could it be a bad hard drive?
unfotunately I do not have a boot disk and have never
booted from one before.

Justin, since you got windows loaded on the new drive you can experiment.
Try the old drive on the Secondary IDE
Channel as Master. See if windows recognizes it and you can read and
transfer any important files to the new drive
Then go to the manufacturers site and download and run a diagnostic
utility to check for bad blocks, sectors etc.

Your proplem is probably Norton. Try getting into safe
mode and uninstalling it. If that does not work (or even
first) use step by step confirmation (press F8 just
before windows starts to get the boot menu) and say no to
anything that seems like it comes from Norton.
If the system starts without NSW running, that was your
problem. I use it, but it really requires some major
tweaking most of the time to keep it from messing up the
boot into windows. Frequently it has to be uninstalled,
cleaned up by symclean.exe and reinstalle numerous times
before it works right.
