windows msg'r vs MSN msg'r

I run win XP home, and I love msn messenger, I hate windows msg'r.
I uninstalled from windows components windows messenger..

I notice while on line (dsl) always connected, that once in awhile I get a
windows messenger msg from a buddy.. This happens when I forget or haven't
opened msn yet.

I do NOT have windows messenger, why does it still run in the background on
my pc?

You do have Windows Messenger - it's part of Windows. Have you enabled your
XP firewall? Do it....if you haven't, you have larger potential security
problems than receiving popup messages.

Unchecking windows messenger in add/remove components does not uninstall
windows messenger. To uninstall windows messenger:
Close down Messenger (right click the messenger icon in the notification
area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button, then
click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK. Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed
instructions and screenshots, go to:

That popup is probably the Windows Messenger Service, which is completely
unrelated to Windows Messenger (despite the name). It allows Windows XP
users to send network messages to each other. You can disable the service
by going to Start, Run and type services.msc then right-clicking on the
Messenger entry, select Properties and change Startup Type to Disabled, then
click on the Stop button.

to Lanwench,
thank you, I do run a firewall and have a firewal in router.. I don't get
pop ups, that is the first thing I disable when reformatting. WHat I did do
is go in add/remove windows components and remove it there, but I guess
there is more to it than that..

thanks,
Sarah

Note too that Outlook Express will try to load Windows Messenger., In
its Tools - Options - uncheck 'Automatically logon to Windows Messenger'
and in its View - Layout uncheck 'Contacts' (which are serviced by
Messenger).

And do try to get out of the habit of reformatting: it is not any longer
a good piece of routine maintenance (if it ever was)

WHY Not?

Because when properly installed on supported hardware and maintained,
Windows XP is a stable operating system that is not subject to the
degradation of performance over time as was Windows 9x. That is not to
say that formatting the drive and reinstalling Windows is never
indicated; just that it should no longer be considered routine
maintenance and should rarely be the first steps of troubleshooting
considered in dealing with a problem.
