I've used Movie Maker for a project 3 years ago, and dusted it off two weeks
ago for a new project. That worked fine. Today I tried to import some new
videos (.AVI) and the system hangs. I've tried 4 different .AVI files, all
with the system hanging. I found something about increasing the number of
something to 200 and did that, but the system is still hanging up.

Is this a part of a product or what?

I can't find any other update or fix.

All help welcome.

It sounds like a codec is missing. I was having the same problem with MM and
installed K-Lite codec pack. Just use the basic package.

http://www.codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_basic.htm

Worked like a charm for me.

Cross-posted to moviemaker newsgroup so hopefully someone there will help.

Dear SC Tom:

I'm not sure whether it worked or not.

I've downloaded the K-Lite Codec pack, and tried to import an .AVI file. It
didn't work, but I think maybe I need to reboot. I'm a little scared to do
that because it's taken me well over an hour to find this URL again, and the
first time I tried it, I was told that the "Web Page has moved"

By the way the notice that I received in my email this morning about an
answer had two hyperlinks, neither of which worked. The links in the message
were:

The installation required a lot of approvals to remove registry entries. I
take it as a matter of faith that when a complex program from an unknown
source tells me my registry is screwed up, what sort of blasphemy would it be
to deny their assertions?

I'll try to bookmark this entry, and reboot and let you know if this fix
worked.

If I don't post a reply here before 2:00 PM EDT here, I'd appreciate it if
someone would try to send me an active URL to my email address at
(e-mail address removed)

My first try at posting this failed, with a URL error.

I don't know why you would be getting email responses from the K-lite
install. It was fine on mine, no malware, no viruses.
Are you posting through a web site like Tech Arena or something? I've never
gotten anything like that from any of my posted questions. But then, I use
Outlook Express at home or Windows Mail on my notebook.

Hi SC Tom.

I'm back, after restarting my system to make sure the codec's took effect.

I still have the same problem.

When I try to import an .AVI file, I get a box that says "Importing" or
something like that. There are two progress bars; the first one is full when
the window opens, and the bottom one is blank. The whole window blinks from
time to time, but letting it perk for more than 15 minutes doesn't change
anything.

The only way I've found to get out of it is CTL-ALT-DEL and close the task.

I even tried it with an .AVI file that worked last week, and now I get the
same lock-up.

By the way, I got a message telling me you'd answered, because I checked the
box "Notify me of replies" when I posted my initial message.

If I were doing this on my own, I'd try to download Windows Movie Maker and
try to overwrite whatever error has crept in. Before I started this question
last night, I looked around and can't find a way to download Movie Maker.
Apparently it was a part of either SP2 or SP3, and I'd hate to back up that
far to solve this problem.

IS THERE ANY SITE WHERE I CAN DOWNLOAD WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER BY ITSELF?

If you have any other ideas, I'd love to hear them. I'm going to try to
erase the tail of these earlier messages.

Thanks for your help.

Gary

Hello LV.

Thank you.
How do I get in contact with the movie maker newsgroup you've
cross-referenced me to?

Are there other places I should look?

Reply here or to (e-mail address removed), whichever is easier for you.

Thanks.

Do you have DIVX Player installed? If so, try opening one of the AVI's in
it. Will any of them open in Media Player without problems?

I have a lot of DIVX files installed, including a couple of .exe files. When
I try to execute one by clicking on it, nothing happens.

I can open the .AVI files with Media Player. They appear fine.

Someone else asked if I had actually installed the codec's. Yes - that's
where I got all the "Can I erase this entry in your registry?" messages.

Is there any way to download and install a replacement version of Movie Maker?

Thanks.
