Mosaic Effect sounds like you are describing
pixelation...IOW...low resolution video which
would appear to be created from lots of small
squares.

What was the source of the video file? Some
digital cameras produce very low resolution
video clips.

If you save the file....File / Save Movie File...
and view it with Windows Media Player does
it still appear pixelated?

This is exactly the same problem I am having. Posted 3/26 "Capturing from a
Sony DCRTRV480. I believe it is something with the camcorder. It did work
for me previously, made a couple movies, no problem. Now I get this
pixilation problem.

What is the model of your Sony?

Is it possible that you could tweak
some settings in the camera to
create a higher resolution video?

Are you importing by USB or FireWire?

I found a site that lists the features of your
Sony dcr-hc18e. I'm thinking you would
have better quality if you imported your
video via FireWire...your camera does
have "i.LINK (DV out)" so you could try it.
If your computer has a firewire port all
you would need is a cable.

I'm not an expert on this issue and possibly
some of the more experienced contributors
can offer some ideas also.
