How do I get started ?
When i connect my Panasonic video camera VDR-150E ( uses 8cm DVD) to WMM
using a USB cable, I set the camera to playback videos, press the play
button, so the video begins, click on capture video in WMM, and all that
happens is that WMM sends me a message saying that my camera has not been
detected.

What else do I have to do ?

Curiously in Windows Media player I can view the videos using the above
method or by simply inserting the discs into the computer, but I want to edit
them.

What are these "codecs" & does Windows XP have them or do I have to download
them ?

Thanks,
Frank

I don't know that WMM will recognize any camcorder connected via USB. Does
the cam also have a firewire output, and does your machine have firewire
input? IF so, that's the way to go.

Not unusual, via USB.

Use the video editing software that came WITH the camera?

If you want to stick with WMM ... Try using the IMPORT INTO COLLECTIONS
(under file) in WMM. Point it to the disc, and see what happens. Failing
that, COPY the disc to your hard drive and try to "Import" again. If that
fails, you'll probably need to convert the files to something WMM
"understands" like .avi or .wmv using 3rd party software.

Codecs are methods of COdeing and DECoding information. Sadly, nobody can
settle on a standard for this so there are TONS of different ones out there.
XP has SOME, but not nearly all.

Computer has firewire, but the camera doesn't.

There was no software with camera. I checked in the shop & they said that
just plug it into Windows XP & it should work OK !!

No luck importing like that either.

Check my website's Import Movie Source Files > Video > Discs page. You need
to do file conversions to get the .VOB files from the DVDs to something
Movie Maker will work with.

finalise disc in the cam.
Pop it into the dvd drive in your pc
convert the mpeg file to wmv using windows media encoder
http://www.myvideoproblems.com/Tutorials/ConvertMpeg2wmv.html
Or to a dv.avi using streamclips squared5
http://www.myvideoproblems.com/WebPages/UsefulProgrammes.htm
and import this file for editing.

Finally managed to use my computer to check out the above, but I still cannot do it.
I downloaded Windows Media Encoder and followed the steps. When I pressed
finalize at the very end, I got an error message saying that it didn't work.
There were two points that I was not sure of; a) I found the VIDEO_TS FILE &
the main VOB file inside - there were 4 others but smaller. I clicked on the
mian one & it went to the Encoder. b) At the point when the Encoder asked for
"video dvd@ 2mbps" I tried with quality video 2mbps being the most simillar.
The audio cd box did not open so I couldn't put anything in there.
What should I try now.
Thanking you,
Frank

No further luck with Windows Media Enc. even though all the steps you
mentioned before now show up, so now I have instaled streamclips squared5 &
the necessary smaller programmes & can play the videos. I cannot convert or
export them as I get a message saying "Cannot convert to..." .
There is a lot of info with the programme but I could not find any simple
instructions explaining how to edit my videos & record them on a seperate cd
when I have finished.
Can you help ?
Thanks,
FRank

If streamclip or WME cannot convert them it could be the files are
corrupted.
Or,
Have you finalised the dvd disc? This needs to be done before conversion
takes place.
Lastly, it could just be a long trek of downloading programmes from the net
until you find one which will do the conversion.

As for editing, there are some hints and tips on both my web site
www.myvideoproblems and www.papajohn.org when finioshing editing, you just
use the save to cd option. MM cd's will only play on a pc, not a dvd player.
If you want them to play on a dvd player, you need to use another app like
nero/roxio and make a vcd or svcd.

I think I may almost be there with Streamclip. Last night I found a blog that
helped with an explanation of how to use streamclip.
I had to record the dvd on to my hard disc, then open streamclip5, which
selected the VOB files automatically. Then, I imported one of these files
into Quicktime , changing the format I think, and was able to remove a piece
of the video that I did not want.
Now, I need to find out how to use streamclip properly & see whether I can
now edit the dvd by importing it into WME.
I will let you know how I get on & send you the address of the blog which
also helped so that you can have a look.
Thanks,
FRank

This is wonderful. I exported it into avi, then saved it onto my hard disc.
I opened WMM and was able to import it there, drag and drop clips etc. now ,
I just have learn a bit about WMM - there is plenty of info about.
Then I will do as you suggest, using nero or roxio to put the finished
product onto a dvd.

Incidentally, the blog that I used to get me started in streamclip squared5
was http://lfhd.blogspot.com/2009/06/mpeg-streamclip-tutorial.html

Since then I have found plenty more.
In streamclip, there is another option - export to dv - What does this mean?

Once again, Thank you very much Graham - I have a small back log of home
movies to catch up on now.
