I have home footage on vhs that i'd like to transfer onto dvd. Can movie maker do this and how? i've never used this software before ( i also have Intervideo windvd create software in my new computer)

No. If all you want is what you stated in your message then MM is not the
right software for you. MM is a program to caputre and edit video and still
photos.

If you have an analog capture card (or TV tuner) on your PC,
you should be able to get the video from the VCR digitized
and onto your hard drive. Then WinDVD Creator will be
able to import that, and burn it to a DVD.

If you have a compatible capture card, WinDVD may even
be able to capture and burn directly to DVD in one step.

i actually do want to end up editing the footage afterwards. but wouldn't i first "capture" from vhs to dvd prior to editing or customizing?
Are you familiar with Intervideo windvd create software?

Not if you want to edit in Movie Maker. MM cannot edit MPEG2 or dvd video
material. MM requires input movies to be preferably in an avi format such as
DV AVI/divx, or in WMV format.
