Windows Movie Maker - unexplained closing

I have used Movie Maker to make three videos in the past, but have recently
had problems with it. When I tried to make a movie, this time, it only lets
me put in a number of clips before it closes itself. I've never had this
problem before and I'm using video/audio that is compatible that've worked
before. (I'm using .avi and .mp3 files.) Sometimes it closes when I click on
the timeline. Does anyone have any explaination?

You may have some incompatibility issues
with your source files. Have a look at the
following article:

File type compatibility with Movie Maker

You fail to mention your OS...if you are
running Vista...disregard the following.

Some users have reported problems
after installing IE7. If this applies to your
situation ...uninstalling IE7 may be worth
a try.

I've also seen a report that disabling the
ffdshow codec could be the fix. To accomplish
this...open Movie Maker and go to...Tools /
Options / Compatibility tab...Uncheck...
ffdshow / OK.

I'll be sure to look at that, thank you.

Oh, I'm sorry. My operating system is Windows XP.

Unfortunately, I do not understand much of the information that was on that
page. Also, my Windows Movie Maker does not have the "Compatibility" tab on
the Options selection. I only have "General" and "Advanced".

Well, I've put the audio in WMA format instead of MP3, but I'm still having
the same problems. I've noticed, however, that I am able to put up to seven
clips on the time line. The eighth clip closes the program.

Apparently you are using an earlier version of Movie
Maker. Have you installed Windows XP SP2?

How did you convert the .mp3 files to .wma?

I used a program called Replay Converter.

Hmn. Perhaps I should look into the SP2 thing. I don't think I have it.

Thank you very much for your help!

Actually, I take that back: I do have SP2. I'll try a system rollback and see
if that fixes anything.

If you have SP2 you should have Movie maker 2.1.

Sometimes a system restore to an earlier time can be helpful.

If you wish to reinstall SP2...have a look at the following site:

Download Windows XP SP2
http://tinyurl.com/6ubys

Generally, users install from the net but this
site allows you to download the complete
file to your hard drive before installing.

It's good for a network administrator because
you can burn it on a CD and install it on as
many computers as you need to.

And it's good for a single machine because
if you ever need to install it again...you'll have
it available without waiting for a download.

XP SP2 and Windows Movie Maker 2.1
is not installed successfully?

Wow, John, you're a genius! I am using Vista Home Basic and MM2.1 has never
worked. It begins loading and then crashes. MM2.0 works fine.

The first thing I tried was the following fix, and much to my surprise, it
worked!!!

I've also seen a report that disabling the
ffdshow codec could be the fix. To accomplish
this...open Movie Maker and go to...Tools /
Options / Compatibility tab...Uncheck...

THANKS!

Woops. I meant that I am using 2.6 now. That's the one I had trouble with
until now. Thanks again!
