windows movie maker moniter goes green

Help, I'm learning to use movie maker 2.1 and when I import clips than try to
view them on the moniter all I see is green. No clip.
Hope someone can help.
 
The movie I am working with is wmv. Tonite I changed the res. to 800 x 600
and it worked for awhile. When I tried to undo a delete it went green again.
I have another computer, older, and it works fine. I do all my graphic work
on this one and want to use MM as I feel it should work. I checked and I have
all the updates so I don't know what else to do.

incompatible file type.

Check to see you have the latest versions of
DirectX
The graphics card manufacturers drivers.
Windows media player and
Windows media encoder.

When installing, install them one at a time and restart pc between installs.

can you tell me how to check my version of Direct x and how to upgrade if
necessary.
