Why doesn't my Windows Movie Maker capture my JVS GR-DVP7U device via my
I-Link (IEEE 1394). What am I missing. What am I doing wrong. My Laptop is a
Sony FS 790 with Windows xp Pro as the OS.

What happens when you try to capture?
Does the tape rewind when WMM tells it to or does it do nothing at all?
First things to look at are hardware as it could be a bad iLink cable or
card or it could be a bad port on the camera. If you have another cable try
it. If you have a friend with a computer and iLink then try capturing with
his/her computer or using his/her camera to try to capture to yours. By
doing a little experimenting you can sometimes find out which piece of
hardware is the problem if any of them and replace that piece rather then
buying parts you don't need.

Also, *some* cam's require that "DV-OUT" is activated in the menu's.
and ensure your cam is set to "VCR" or "VTR" (Playback mode).

And now we're even, I should have mentioned that as well. :-)

Thank you for responding. It just doesn't detect my JVC GR-DVP7U camcorder
device. Nothing happens. Although I hear a beep on the notebook when I power
up the Camcorder to the play position.

Well the beep signifies that the computer knows the camera is there but that
doesn't mean it knows what it is or what to do with it. Unfortunately this
will sometimes happen even if the card or cable are bad so it doesn't tell
us too much. We now know that you are setting the camera to playback mode so
we can eliminate that possibility.
