Can Anyone tell me how to stop Movie Maker from Crashing. I know that in XP
it would choke and crash a lot, but I can't get it to render a single video
in Vista. Oddly, It runs very well when doing the editing, but when I try to
publish it it crashes almost immediately. I've heard some say that Nero is
to blame, I have this installed, and tried to uncheck the plugins for that
for Media Player but it didn't work. I have n't uninstalled it yet as I was
hoping I wouldn't have to sacrifice this.

Help...

What are your machine specs?

especially important is CPU speed and the video card you have

Well its worth uninstalling Nero anyway and seeing if it fixes the problem.
You can always reinstall it again afterwards. At least then you have a
starting point to possible cause.

The main component to making a vid or DVD is the final step, what's
called "rendering" in professional circles. This requires a powerful
encoder. Good ones aren't cheap. I don't know what Microsoft throws
in, but it isn't the best. One of the best reasonably priced MPEG
encoders is produced by a German company called Main Concept. That's
what comes included with Sony's products I mention below.

Do yourself a favor and stop using the Mickey Mouse included Movie
Maker, it isn't worth all the aggravation if you do more than a vid or
two a year.

I highly recommend Sony's Vegas if you're really serious, but it is
expensive (over $500) as you would expect for a professional grade
application. It is equal to and in several ways superior to the
popular Final Cut Pro that costs almost three times as much but only
available on the Mac platform.

The good news is they have a watered down little brother version
called Movie Studio, for about $80 which you can demo. Once you try it
you'll never go back to clunky Movie maker again. Most everything is
happens in real time, filters, effects, so you see your changes as you
make them.

I do a lot of videos, but most of them don't need a lot flashy stuff, simple
cutting and transitions are all I need. I've tried Vegas, Premier, and a
host of others and keep going back to Movie Maker. The reason being simple,
it's freakin' easy and time efficient. What takes two seconds to do in Movie
Maker takes two days to do in Vegas and that frustrates me, plus you have to
be a rocket scientist to figure out half the stuff.

I'd be happy if Movie Maker simply rendered the video.

Like I said, it is professional grade. :-)

TMPGEnc is another simpler editor with a decent decoder.
