I have not used Windows Movie Maker before now. I work for a non profit
organization. What I want to do is import DVDs of conferences in which we
have been a part of, and edit them. My question is can this be done in Movie
Maker and what is the best tutorial for me to begin to use and learn?

No, the mpeg video format of DVD is not compatible with WMM.

WMM is a neat but very basic and limited utility.
MS do not want to step on the toes of any other software house.
So this XP bundled freeware is deliberately designed to be "basic".
You require an editing application, alas they are not free.

Thank you for your answer. Do you have a suggestion for a microsoft product
that would be a good"starter" , but also do the job. Basic editing and
effects plus a little more "pro" stuff are what I am looking to find.

This is a Movie Maker Forum/Newsgroup, and few of the experts in here would
consider the program of limited ability. Check out some of the things being
done on MovieMakersForum.....I have Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, Camtasia and
others...yes they are expensive and expansive, but I most often use Movie
Maker for my videos. Armed with intuition, ingenuity, a library of xml's,
and some skills you can make movies with the best of them. Check out
PapaJohn's high def emulations. To start off easy, download AVS Video
Converter at www.avsmedia.com (free trial, and costs $29.95). With it, you
can 'rip' your dvd's and convert them into any compatible format you would
like (try xvid or divx). These are then readily importable into Movie Maker
and you can edit to your heart's content. It is correct that, Movie Maker
usually balks at Mpeg's but its easy enough to convert with AVS Video
Converter or other like programs. Read more posts in here, PapaJohn's
awesome website, and the MovieMakerForum and understand how the boundaries
are stretched by the experts who work with this simple, efficient, and free
program. You will run across a large number of sites from people who give
their all to develop everything from striking backgrounds to xml's with
produce effects you won't see anywhere else. Arm your machine with some of
the various effects, transitions, and titling xml's and it won't take long
for you to become a fan. Many are free, but you can check out Rehan's site,
www.pixelan.com, and www.adorage.de ......that will give you an idea of where
you can take Movie Maker. Good luck!
