Hi,

I'm using a JVC Everio GZ-MC200, a new camcorder with a 5GB hard drive wich
produces .MOD files. They seems to be in fact MPEG2 files, with AC3 sound.

I want to make my movies then export them in .WMV format.

The only software i know that handle correctly these .MOD files is Cyberlink
PowerDirector, wich is shipped with the Everio. But it does not export .WMV
files, only DivX ou MPEG2.

So I export them with MPEG2 then get them into Windows Media Encoder.

But Windows Movie Maker proposes approximatively the same features as
PowerDirector, and I'd prefer to use only Windows Movie Maker to make and
compress my movie, so that I don't have to use two softwares and to do an
intermediary export in MPEG2.

Windows Movie Maker does not accept .MOD files
So I renamed them to .MPG. It now accept the files. But it freezes when I
import them.

My question is, anyone encoutered this issue ? Know how to handle these
files in Windows Movie Maker ? Any experience using these .MOD with something
other than PowerDirector ? I tried Premiere Pro 1.5 too, it does not work
again.

Most apps are designed to work with dv-avi files, which is why MM is
crashing. You could try ulead videostudio, which can handle mpegs, or again
do a mpeg to avi conversion.

Hello,
I loved your Everio you got there --- how much did you bought it? How much hours can enter in 5 GB memory card?

Try these again:
1. Stick to PowerDirector as it is your proprietary software as different company has their own and no standardization, so one can
open other company movie files. Its the same problem with so many memory cards and each digital camera company used his own card.
Learn all about PowerDirector and find in the Options if it will allow you to saved in DV-DVI file because Windows Movie Maker
(WMM) can also read that. You didn't tell us why you liked WMM even though there're the same.

2. Try this all converter site: http://medlem.spray.se/converters/? Look at M category.

3. Correct me if I'm wrong --- isn't it MOD file is only audio file? Are you saying MOV file?

4. Everybody chose DVD as the medium to distribute our movie --- can you not make it? Why you still want WMV format?

Regards,

Hi

I don't want to have to convert files or to use another paying program.
So I'll stick to PowerDirector !

Rino1. I wanted to use Windows Movie Maker because it exports directly to WMV
format, which PowerDirector does not. The point is, I want to optimize my
workflow : as of today, I have to first import and produce with PowerDirector
then export as MPEG then import in Cleaner XL or Windows Media Producer and
convert to WMV.

2. I don't want to convert :-) I just want a software that handles MOD files
and export to WMV !

3. Yes this is really video files, not those old music files used with
"trackers".

4. I use WMV because after producing/encoding I upload my videos to my
website and they are meant to be played directly from my website.

Thanks Rino !

Sorry I forgot your first questions

I paid 1400 EUR for the Everio.

About record times and other technicals, please look at this page :
http://www.jvc.com/presentations/everio/highlights/

My opinion is that this is the best video camera of the world, because of
it's hard drive and it's directly creating movie files ready for your
computer. The video quality is amazing, the camera is really small and light,
and it's simple to use. And it uses USB2.

But this is the first product of this type, and you can find many drawbacks
as : very small battery life (1h), very bad quality if lightness is not good
(there's no light integrated, just a flash for still photos), use ****ing
unknown file format

So my next video camera will have 10h battery life, integrated light, 40GB
hard drive and will directly create WMV or DivX files ! And will send them to
my computer over Blueetooth ! :-)

Hello Everio,
You don't have to use WMV and simplify your workflow; Just after you export as MPEG you can immediately uploaded to your website
and view it with Widows Media Player.

By the way, you forgot my first question --- how much? Believe me I'm planning also to buy one. Please give me your store link?
Also, I understand JVC gives only 4GB of Microdrive and not 5GB big. Please tell us how good is the picture quality? etc.

Thanks You,

1) The Everio produces non standard MPEG (ie. AC3 sound). Not eveyone will be
able to play it directly from the web using WMP. And above that, the quality
is too high even in eco format (1.5 Mbps), the bitrate is not meant for web
but for DVD.

2) Quality is AWESOME. But with lot of light, preferably day light not
artificial. I'm thinking of taping two Maglite lights on it :-) If you use
very fine mode it's DVD quality, 8.88 Mbps, 720x480. But it's big ! 1 hour
will fill the 4GB hard drive. I use normal mode, 4.2 Mbps, 2 hours.
The gain up mode and DIS mode (image stabilizer) are really bad bad bad.
The sound quality is perfect.
The photo mode is really fair.
The Everio is very very light so it's hard not too shake when you shoot. I
can't do 10X zoom because it amplfies too much my hand shaking. (I don't have
alzheimer ). DIS doesn't help.

3) Didn't heard of 5BG hard drive. The Everio is sold with a 4GB everywhere
in the world for the moment.

4) Something I didn't said about drawbacks, appart of the too short 1 hour
battery life (should buy 2 additional batteries), is the boot time : 13
seconds. Okay you think it's fair but I assure you it's not, it's really
irritating when you want to shoot something RIGHT NOW ! :-) Compared to my
Sony DSC-P150 Cyber-Shot wich is ready in less than 1 sec, even in video
mode, it takes ages to boot.

5) I paid 1400 EUR (1800 USD). In a shop called "Fnac", only in France.
They have a website
http://www.fnac.com/Shelf/article.asp?PRID=1603789

As a conclusion I'd say it's really cool gadget. I insist on the gadget
aspect. It's not a professional tool at all. You'll find some things
frustrating but hey... FIRST HARD DRIVE VIDEOCAM IN THE WORLD (non pro i
mean) ! Just drag and drop your files !
Can't wait for a 40GB hard drive, 5 hours battery and DivX/WMV format ! ;-)

PS : don't buy the GZ-MC 100 (vertical). Buy the GZ-MC 200.

Thank you Everio,
I liked your complete and truthful comments on your Everio. I'll response accordingly:
1) Yes, it's not a problem to play MPEG with WMP. The only requirement is to have the right CODEC. I can give you the link but why
not give my your website sample movie and I'll try to view and hear the sound and if I'm successful then I'll tell you what to do.

2) Regarding Everio needs more light; I noticed the lens and image sensor were much wider and bigger respectively --- why it
didn't help? Can you not adjust the shutter speed and Iris?

3) I actually heard it from you, go back to your original thread. Don't worry on this --- we already agreed on 4 GB Microdrive.
Here're 5, 6 & 12 GB available:

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0310/03102102biggestcfs.asp
http://www.pretec.com/product/SSD/CF_Commercial/Cheetah80X.htm

4) I really thanks for your honest comments here. I'll cancel of buying at this time and wait until JVC improve the long booting
time. They really hide this in their ads. They should use Canon's DIGIC Processor for a quick 0.2 second boot time.

5) This price I liked: http://www.amphotoworld.com/product.asp?id=jvgzmc200&l=DigitalSaver&ds_ref_key=HHEDEDOIOCJEDDI

6) I'll add this last one; First MPEG-2 DVD quality Digital Camcorder with removable flash memory card that record 1 hrs with 4 GB
Microdrive given as standard accessories. If JVC can improve on No. 2 & 4 I'll give them my $$$. ;o)

Hello Everio,
According to this brochure:
http://www.jvc.com/presentations/everio/download/pdf/gz_mc200_100_us.pdf

Zoom-in to the highlighted spot:
"The supplied software supports a variety of file formats for distribution via the web or email. Supported formats includes
DV-AVI, Windows-AVI. MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, as well as Widows Media Video (WMV) and RealVideo Movies (RVM)that can be streamed over
the Internet."

The bottom-line:
For streaming over the Internet; You needs to upload 2 different formats: WMV and RVM, link them with an openning Icons. You can
also convert to MOV format for Quick Time Player so everyone can easily view your movies and nobody were left behind.

One last note:
You've to read the manual and study all the functions of your Everio and more important practices shooting in all weather
condition, in and out door to get acquainted with all adjustment or settings. Yes, the brochure says you could manually adjust the
Shutter Speed and Exposure, etc. I'm hoping someone will tell more about the 13 seconds booting or start up time.

All The Best,

Hello EveryOne,
If you're interested in JVC Everio --- you must see this:
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/conten...rd-Drive-Everio-Camcorder---Smallest-Ever.htm

According to this Review:
http://www.i4u.com/section-viewarticle-72.html Under Video Recording topic; Switching it on takes about 5 seconds!

Regarding 1 hour battery life:
Because Everio designed with no optical viewing and relied on powered LCD monitor and it eat up battery life. Hope JVC put a
switch to switch it off when not using; likes when downloading and rendering back to camera.

All The Best,
