I have a toshiba laptop with windows vista home premium with SP1, and I am
trying to use the Windows movie maker to edit and burn some tv shows recorded
using a Pinnacle PCTV stick. When I try to import the mpeg file after
recording the movie maker simply freezes, then I get an error message that it
needs to close. Any suggestions? All microsoft updates are installed
regularly, my graphics are up to date also. Can this be a codec issue, and
if so, can anyone point me to an update that will work?

Hi, my name’s Cody, and I’m working with the Windows Media Outreach Team to help answer questions that folks might have about their copies of Windows Media Player.

A lot of the problems that pop up can often be attributed to codecs, but before you run out and start randomly downloading all kinds of codec packs, make sure that they are 1) from a trusted source, and 2) codecs that you actually need.

Sometimes, codecs will disagree with one another, so having a ton of them on your system can cause all kinds of problems. There are several codec tools, available for free, that will analyze your files to see what, if any, codecs you’ll need to play the files you want to play.

Here are a couple of free tools that will do this for you: Gspot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) and Sherlock (http://www.updatexp.com/sherlock-codec-detective.html) Both of these work great, and using these on your file will tell you what codecs you need to get a file running properly, without making you download anything that you don’t need.

Using these tools are a great way to see if codecs are the cause of the problem. I hope these links and resources are helpful!

Thanks,

Cody

Even though it's for XP...maybe the

I was having issues with the video preview pane not displaying the video,
preventing me from editing it. Used that codec pack and its all fine now. Ta.

I have converted some analog video files to my computer. My regular media
players recognize them as video files, but in movie maker it recognizes them
only as audio files. Can you give me a solution to this problem because I
cannot attach any music or view the video itself in movie maker.

That's a normal symtom of trying to use an MPEG2 file that doesn't work in
Movie Maker.

The way forward is to convert the file to one that works, before importing
it. See my website's Import Movie Source Files > Video > MPEG page.

I went to both of the links and I tried the sherlock one, but I am not sure
what I should be looking for. I am showing all sorts of codecs, and I found
multiple ones for mpegs. How do I know if they are interfering with each
other and/ or if they have errors?

I tried using the sherlock one. It worked, but I am not sure what to do with
the results. I found multiple codecs, a few different mpegs. How do I know if
they are interfering with one another? Also how do I know if there are any
errors? If it helps at all I am trying to create movies in movie maker from
m2ts video shot on a Cannon.

Thanks
