Hi All -

I have Windows Messgenger (not MSN)on my computer. I
have all the latest updates installed.

Windows Messenger is set to open and run on start-up.
When I start my computer, Windows Messenger does not
open. When I attempt to start it, my screen display
changes to a distored size.

I have run all my virus scans and spyware programs and
they come up clean.

I am assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that Windows
Messenger has become corrupted or is in conflict with
something else (although I have not installed any new
programs lately).

I have gone to add/remove windows components, but, if I
understand correctly, that only removes it from the
program list, but does not actually remove or repair the
program.

Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like there are greater problems than Messenger not working;
Messenger is not working either because somthing has become corrupt or you
have somthing installed which prevents it from working. If it's the second,
then your system is working quite safely. If messenger isn't working because
somthing is corrupt then you have a, potentially, large problem. The reason
why you might have a large problem is that windows messenger is so integrated
into the operating system that there are all sorts of interdependancies.
Windows messenger is really NOT a good program to use because it's like
having a big sign hung-out which reads "Hey, EVERYONE PLEASE come bother me
and make my system work much harder". A MUCH better, and more full featured,
messenger client to use is MSN messenger. If you want to make your computer
MUCH more efficent then don't use windows mesenger; there are ways to either
spoof it so that it doesn't run or there are ways (in windows XP) to
uninstall it. GOOD luck!
