I have Windows XP and Windows Messenger came installed. I
downloaded MSN Messenger and now the 2 conflict when I
dial-up the Internet. I want to remove the older Windows
Messenger but am not really sure which is the best way.
Only MSN Messenger shows up in my "Add/Delete programs"
and I am hesitant to remove Messenger manually through
the hard drive. Any ideas?

Hi,

Simply go to Add Remove Windows Components same place.

Find Windows Messenger (bottom of List) and clear the
Check Mark.

(It will remove the conflict, but for some odd reason it
still tries to gain access to local network and internet)

Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant
messaging scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict
with Messenger and
cause some of this behavior. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click
on the Norton
Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose
'Open Norton
Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant
Messenger and
click OK.

Found the reason it is still active after uninstall.

If you are using Outlook for mail you need to Open Outlook
go to Tools -> Options -> Other: And remove the tick under
Instant Messaging
