All of a sudden Windows Messenger has begun to log in with Internet Explorer
or Outlook Express (I'm not sure which). How do I keep it from doing this?
(The icon appears in the notification area.)

To disable "Windows Messenger":

Open "Windows Messenger" and from the Toolbar select
Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck:

"Run this program when Windows starts" and
"Allow this program to run in the background", then
click OK.

Next, open Outlook Express and from the Toolbar select
Tools > Options and under the General tab uncheck
"Automatically log on to Windows Messenger" and click
APPLY.

or

The only item checked was "Allow this program to run in the background". I
unchecked it. I still don't know why it started. I'll see what happens next.

Carey,
Until reading this note I assumed Messanger was uninstallable from Control
panel / Add & Remove.
I don't use the program and have it disabled. What drove me nuts was how the
icon stayed on the bottom right (active progs.)
I went to taskbar setup and made it hidden always. After reading your tip I
may just uninstall it. I mean it is easy enough to reinstall.
