Windows Messenger within a corporate environment

Hi,

Could anyone please advise me as to what is required to enable XP Messenger to be used without connecting to the passport service ?

We are currently looking for an instant messaging solution and are evaluating our options. We don't currently run Microsoft Exchange but do use Active Directory for authentication.

Could some kind soul please advise me of the possibilities ?

Without an Exchange 2000 IM Server, the only option to connect Messenger locally would be a
Live Communications Server, see here:

Thanks for the speedy response Jonathan. Live Communication Server looks like it's a great product, but it just seems like a very expensive option owing to the CAL requirement.

Indeed, it's not cheap by any means but to be honest, I haven't looked at the prices of the
other competing business-IM type products recently. However, those are the only two server
solutions for Windows Messenger (unless you can find some other SIP-based product that claims
compatibility).

If you do decide or want more info on LCS, there's also a separate newsgroup for that here:

If you find some other product that better suits your needs, I wouldn't mind hearing about it
(just for people asking in the future).
