I've read many posts here about uninstalling windows messenger as I only
wish to use MSN Messenger.

I've followed all the advice from stopping it loading on startup to deleting
the thing but still it persists! Now when I log onto the net I have found
it runs in the background and logs me in with no clue that it has until
someone suddenly IM's me out of the blue and up pops it's icon! (I have no
idea i'm signed in and others can see that i'm online until that point)Also
if I load Outlook Express it then seems to appear, or when I log into MSN
Messenger it tells me i'm logged into a net pasport already (which I presume
is windows messenger). I've double checked all the options that windows
messenger doesn't load up or log me on on startup but it's still there!

Any ideas anybody?

Cheers

Clippy

Greetings Clippy,

Do you have Norton Antivirus installed? If so, Norton added a new "instant messaging
scanning" feature to recent versions of Norton Antivirus, which can conflict with Messenger
and cause some of this behavior. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton
Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton
Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and
click OK.

As well, close Outlook Express, then download and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg
This will stop Outlook Express from loading with Messenger.
