Windows messenger says I need update..but I don't

Every time I open my email a box comes up saying windows
messenger needs an update, click yes to update. Ido and
then it says the version I have is newer, do I want to
continue, so of course I say no then, as it would install
an older version. That should be the end of it, but it
continues to come up!! It is very annoying! Why does it
continue to do this? What can I do to stop it?
