Please advise how I may disable the windows messenger pop
ups. They are profusely annoying.

I am so discouraged to learn that rude feature came
hardwired with my new xp.

Sincerely,

Jeanette;
Messenger Service is a valuable feature to many.
It is nor reasonable to eliminate a feature just because all do not
use the feature.
You need to learn to safely and securely use your computer.

No need to pay for the fix.
For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330904
Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve
the real problem.
The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom.
The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.
Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports.
The firewall controls the traffic.

Internet Connection Firewall will not work if you have AOL.
AOL is not compatible with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
(ICF)
If you have AOL, you should contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party
firewall.

Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts

Check this link:

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:

Or

For internet pop-ups, try one of these:

Before advising someone to get a third party firewall, you should
advise them that there are other messenger apps that work as well, or
Better than Windows Messenger, without the popups, and that are
compatible with all ISPs. Notably: AOL Instant messenger, and
ICQ.....both free. Both have potential for spam, but with a few
checks in the options box............. I've had no spam from either in
years. Windows Messenger is a different story though............. I
got fed up with it and disabled it over a year ago.

Open ports are not an issue with messengers. They ALL NEED open ports
to function. It is how the messenger EXPLOITS these ports which is
the problem. Microsoft is notorious for their ability (and
inclination ) to intrude on your system. If you want to shut all the
"open doors" microsoft has placed on your pc, try the free program
" Antispy-XP".
I swear by it. You can read more about it, and download it if you
like, here: http://www.webattack.com/get/xpantispy.shtml

Jeannette,
.
If you are referring to pop-ups, then I suugest you
invest in a program from byebyeads.com. It's brilliant.

I think you're confusing Messenger Service and Windows Messenger ... two separate programs. Messenger Service is a function of 'net send' which IT Administrators use to send messages to other users, computers, or messaging names on the network. As Jupiter Jones states, "it is a valuable feature to many" but it has also become a way for spammers to get to your desktop.

Jupiter is entirely correct in that one needs to use a firewall to block those ads while allowing the Administrator to communicate with his/her network, and I believe that's what Jeanetter was experiencing.

HTH.... Fred

After re-reading it, I see I WAS confusing the two.
I apologize for my error.

To disable the messenger service in XP do this (start, run,
services.msc) find the line that says messenger or messenger service
and turn off autostart/disable it. NOT A PART OF MSN MESSENGER.

Kent W. England [MVP] rambled on in microsoft.public.windowsxp.customize:
Do you mean in the same way that your telephone is hard-wired with rude
and annoying telemarketers?

Disable the Messenger service.

Disabling Messenger Service is not a fix unless you consider ignoring
the real problem and treating just the symptom an acceptable fix.
