I have finally managed to get both video and sound to work with W. Messenger
in XP. After asking for help here and not getting any from the MVPs except
and intelligent reply from Chuck who pointed out the firewall problems (and
the fact that Microsoft is uninterested in helping non-business users) this
is what finally worked for me:
1) Closed ZoneAlarm (didn't need to uninstall it)
2) Enabled the built-in firewall of XP and Internet Connection Sharing
3) Enabled the Universal Plug and Play using a small utility.
This feature is no longer enabled by default with XP. It used to be.
That's it. No problems with video and sound after that.
If I don't trust the Windows firewall I can load ZoneAlarm and just close it
for the Windows Messenger sessions.
I wonder why Microsoft and their gurus don't advertise the above facts when
so many users have the same problem.
