running xp pro. Windows messenger appears to start --
when I double click the icon, the hour glass runs for a
few seconds, but Messenger never comes up. The are no
error, and I can not determing anything from the event
log.

Windows Messenger has worked for me in the past. I had
to install AOL but it is not configured as my default IM.

I have tried reinstalling, but with no success.

Any ideas

I have the same issue ... Microsoft paid support could
not fix. I am running MSN Messenger instead, but don't
like that version. It works OK when Windows Messenger
doesn't. You would think someone would know what's
wrong. This is the second time Windows Messenger has
done this to me. The only way to get it to work again is
to scratch the disk and reload. I will not do that again
for this issue. I too am running XP Pro with the same
symptoms.

just sent you an email message, and here is what I did
and mine appears to be working...

Ok so I just got it to work. I disconnected my network
cable. Started messenger, actually started an ie
browser and then clicked on the messenger icon on my ie
browser, and messenger started, then it gave me an
error.. Something like ..could not find the service.
Then I plugged the cable back in waited a few seconds hit
retry, and it logged me into the dot net service and then
messenger ran through its log in and is up and running as
it should be.

the dot net service is something different from MSN
Messenger

still does not work for me ... I have an Event ID (4) in
the event viewer and it does not load. MSN Messenger
however works ...

Greetings,

Download and run these .reg files in the affected accounts:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/enablewindowsmessenger_user.reg
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/enablemessenger.reg
After running these, reboot and then try opening Windows Messenger again.
