Since I loaded the Spyware software everytime I open Outlook Express to
check my mail Windows Messenger is activated but not logged on and the
little icon appears in my taskbar. I use MSN Messenger (which uses the same
protocols) and I keep that icon in my taskbar. Even if I "close" the
Windows Messenger icon it re-appears everytime I start Outlook Express. How
do I stop this small annoyance from happening?

I may have found an answer of sorts myself. I went into the options of
Windows Messenger and I un-checked the "Allow Windows Messenger to run in
the background" and now the icon still appears when I activate Outlook
Express but it disappears when I close Express. Good enough for me.

To Disable Messenger Four things to do.

Messenger, tools menu, Options uncheck the item for start at windows start

Messenger, tools menu, Options uncheck the item for run in background

OE, Tools menu, Options, uncheck run Messenger at startup

Disable or don't open the 'contacts' pane in IE, and OE (OE, View menu, "customize toolbar", uncheck 'contacts bar')

or (with XP Pro) go to start/run, and type gpedit.msc open local computer policy/user configuration/administrative templates/
windows components/windows messenger doubleclick the 'do not allow windows messenger to be run' enable Note: This setting is
available under both Computer Configuration and User Configuration. If both are present, the Computer Configuration version of this
setting takes precedence.

Tell them the easy way to completely uninstall it......

Open windows/inf/sysoc.inf. Delete the "HIDE" leaving the commas. Save and
close. Now go to add or remove programs/add/remove windows components where
it will now show, and uncheck it. Then delete the folder/files that is left
in explorer and clean it out of your registry.........and say Good Riddance.
:)

Doing that causes Outlook Express to delay in opening, (and other side effects) Although these can also be fixed with a registry
edit, I feel recommending it (unrequited) on a newsgroup is not appropriate.

Nonsense. It's as appropriate as what you said, much more effective and any
delay in OE is in your mind.....or possibly MS propaganda.

Ad-Aware from Lavasoft has a plug-in that corrects this

"Disable Windows Messenger From Appearing When You Open Outlook Express"
