Windows Messenger 5 - Automatic Logon

I have an annoying problem with Windows Messenger. Everything WAS
working fine until I decided to try MSN 6 - had a look - very pretty -
don't need 95% of the extra gumph so it got uninstalled. Ever since
Windows Messenger has lost the ability to automatically log itself on
when I reboot.

I have deleted the passport accounts in my user account and re-created
them. I have also tried to "Sign in As..." and selected the "Sign in
automatically" option a number of times.

This setting does not seem to stick. :(

Any ideas???
 
Do you know how to permenantly uninstall, delete, or at
least disable Messenger?

Have you tried checking the 'Preferences' option in 'tools' menu. May be you
need to check this 1st option there. Hope this helps

Well apart from the option in the Preferences tab of Options which
determines whether Windows Messenger runs at startup there is nothing
else relevant here.

Yes it is starting automatically, it just won't log on automatically.

Strange but true...

This is by design -- Windows Messenger 5 will not automatically start when MSN Messenger 6 is
installed (this is to avoid two clients starting at once and "fighting" to login).

To fix this, close down Windows Messenger (right-click its icon and choose Exit), then click
Start, then Run, type "regedit" and then click OK. You'll now be in the Registry Editor, if
you're not familiar with it, this is where most configuration settings in Windows end up. To
fix your problem you'll need to navigate to the My
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService key (they look like folders
and navigation is the same as in Windows Explorer). After you find the MessengerService key,
click it, then click the Edit menu, then choose Delete. Confirm the operation and now the
MessengerService key should be completely gone. Then close the registry editor, click Start,
then All Programs, then Windows Messenger. You'll need to sign in one more time manually
(type your login/password) into Windows Messenger, and after this it will once again log on
automatically.
