I tried using my original messenger that I have been using for some time. I
was told by a popup that I had to upgrade. Did the upgrade and now I can't
sign in at all. Am I supposed to make a configuration change somewhere?

Greetings,

The easiest solution here is to upgrade to Windows Messenger 5.1:

Thank you for the quick response.
Sorry, I was mixing MSN and Windows Messenger versions. I had Windows
Messenger 4.7 and I did upgrade to 5.1.
When I try to log into Windows Messenger it never logs in. I get the message:
Signing into .NET Messenger Service failed because the service ie
temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. Click the Help button to
check the current .NET Service status.
There is no error number.
When I click on Help it shows that all systems are stable and running.
Right below it says required upgrade available.
I have tried registrying suggested dll's (from various websites), defraging,
running anti-virus scan, uninstalling and reinstalling.
I can log into Windows Messenger using Trillian on my machine and I can log
into Windows Messenger from another machine that has ver. 4.7 installed.
I do believe I have all Microsoft updates for XP SP2 installed.
Thanks
