I'm looking for a good free app that allows windows messaging over a LAN.
Anyone any ideas please on the best software available (something similar to
Winpopup in Win98 if possible).

Try WinMessenger. It is much better then WinPopup ever was.
It can be downloaded from http://www.winpopup.com
 
But isn't this a trial version that runs out in 30 days?

Wondering if there is a good completely free utility that i can use.
