Traveling frequently, I've bought DVDs - copyrighted,
full-priced editions of U.S. movies - from stores in the
U.S. and foreign countries. But each time I put in a
disk, I'm reminded I have to change the national format
of my player - and that I only have "x" number of such
changes left before Windows Media Player ceases
functioning. What kind of insanity is this? Why
shouldn't I be able to buy and use DVDs from reputable
stores in, for instance, London, Madrid and New York? Or
can I?

Unfortunately not. DVDs are regionalized... Region 1 being
US/Canada/Mexico, Region 2 being Europe etc etc

Do a websearch for DVDGenie..... which will do what you want.

It's not Microsoft's fault, but the responsibility of the hardware
manufacturer of your DVD drive. Should you overstep their 5 allowed region
changes, your drive will have to be sent back to them for resetting.
