I reinstalled XP Home Edition yesterday. The sound was working perfectly on
it just before that. However, now I can't get any sound. The Windows Media
Player displays the following message:

"Windows Media Player Error - Cannot play back the audio stream: no audio
hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding."

Is there anything I can do?

Thank you.

You need to install your audio drivers, visit the PC or motherboard mfg's
website to download them.

This additional information might help you help:

I googled the error message and followed the steps suggested (by
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/236396) until I was in the Device Manager.
When there, the info under 'Sound, video and game controllers' looks similar
to that found on my other computer that is working fine.

However, my other computer doesn't have an 'Other devices' listed but this
one, a computer that I recently inherited, does.

The 'Other devices' has a yellow question mark beside it and when it is
opened the items listed below (Multimedia Audio Controller, SM Bus
Controller, Universal Serial BUS (UBS) Controlled) all have yellow "?"s and
"!" beside them.

Where/what is "the PC or motherboard mfg's website"? Can you/anyone send me
the URL or a non-abbrev that can be entered into a search engine?

thank you.

We aren't mind readers and we can't see your motherboard from our computers.
You need to either read the documentation that came with the computer, look
at the nameplate that is on the computer to find the manufacturer or run a
program, such as Belarc Advisor (http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html)
to determine the hardware on your computer.

No it doesn't, other than confirming what I originally said, your missing
your audio, plus a couple other drivers. See LVTravel's reply and respond to
it.
