windows media player ends prematurely

When i open a video WMP brings up a black screen, says
its 'connecting' and then just closes prematurely. I have
tried installing the lastest version of WMP 9 and the WMP
9 codecs. Anyone have any ideas?
 
try the latest version of directX. Have you installed any other apps or
codecs such as divx that may be interfering. Perhpas do a system restore.
