Windows Media Player--audio problem.

I am having an audio problem using Windows Media Player 11 Version
11.0.5721.5230. Loud static is heard for the first 1.5 minutes of play on
either audio or video file. After that time the sound is perfect, and
remains that way for playing further selections as long as the player is left
up and running. If I close the player and then start again I have the same
problem all over again. I am using Windows XP. I need some advice.
If reinstalling Windows Media Player would help, should I go ahead and
download and install a new one (ll.0) over the top of my current one, or
should I uninstall the current one first?
Thanks for your help.

Static like that is almost always a problem with the sound card driver.
Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the sound device, Action
menu, "Uninstall", then restart Windows, to find the device drivers again
automatically.

Thank you for your reply, but I think I have a different problem, since the
condition still exists. I neglected to mention that both audio and video
files open and play properly with either Realplayer or the Infraview program.
Thanks again.
