windows media player 9

Something has happened to windows which now generates
an error when I try to use media player 9. The event
information is: "Event Type: Error
Event Source: Microsoft Windows Media Player
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1001
Date: 1/16/2004
Time: 5:01:28 PM
User: N/A
Computer: ******
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 1001 ) in Source (
Microsoft Windows Media Player ) cannot be found. The
local computer may not have the necessary registry
information or message DLL files to display messages from
a remote computer. The following information is part of
the event: 33760779.
Data:

It was working fine a couple of weeks ago and now is not.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, which
leads me to believe that this is a windows problem. When I
uninstall version 9, version 7 is restored and works fine.

Any suggestions on what else I might look for?

It also has been generating this error message:

I don't know if this is helpful or not.
