It is apparently possible to get WMP to work with MP3 files but to use
this as the recording format requires an add in - it offers you several
commercial offerings you can buy. Is there any freeware add in to WMP
that will do this?

Why even mess around with WMP to begin with? Winamp can do many more things
than it can, and it's all free.

WMP is rife with DRM, phone home to Microsoft, etc.

Google for Media Player Classic. It's an open source rewrite of Media
Player 6 with lot's of options. Will play most anything you throw at
it
including MP3's.

Remember what John Wayne said.."Don't let the bastards get you down!"

I am sorry I cannot help you. But there is a great alternative to using MS
WMP. It is the free CDex program. It is free and will BOTH decode and
encode MP3's. CDex is Pricelessware. see www.pricelessware.org

DB poweramp will convert just about anything including converting directly
from cd to various codecs. It also has a player.
Either that or media classic player will do what you want without spyware.
