Windows Media Player 8.0 knocks the stuffing out of Windows XP

Some sites on the Net have the ability to click a link to a mpg file and the video will start to play in Windows Media Player since that is the application I use for the file type. This is Windows XP. The Windows Media Player is what comes with Windows XP SP1 on the CD-ROM. But when I click one of these videos Windows XP will be no more. EVERYTHING hangs. I mean everything. The only thing that is still functional is the CPU's fan. Nothing else at all works. I have to cold shut down to fix the trouble. Any suggestions what to do here other than don't view video on the web? Local video does not do this.
